When you are riding in an airplane and experience turbulence; what’s happening?

What’s happening is that you are experiencing competing air currents. Warm air is rising and cold air is sinking, and both are hitting the plane at the same time which creates turbulence. The plane can’t go two places at the same time—so it just shakes! It can be a wild ride!

In the same way, a church can experience turbulence when there are competing values among the leaders and members of a church. One group of members prefers a set of values over against another group of members, and then the wrestling begins.

This is why it is critical for the leaders of the church to set the tone and to state clearly what the values of the church are. Here at Redemption Church Miami, we place an emphasis on the following values:

1. Gospel-Centered
Everything we do points to or flows from the Gospel

2. Community Life
We value spending our lives together as family (Acts 2:42-46)

3. Relationships over Programs
It’s all about relationships. We will put people before tasks and relationships before programs. We will need to have programs and accomplish tasks—but we will seek to make sure they are being done in order to serve people and build relationships

4. Mission Engagement
Miami doesn’t exist for us—We exist for Miami. We will serve our city by proclaiming the good news of what Jesus Christ has done and by loving our neighbors, neighborhood, and city in tangible ways (Matthew 28:19-20 & Luke 10:25-37)

5. Equipping and Sending Every Christian
We value training and preparing every Christian to fulfill the ministry that God has uniquely called and gifted them to do. We do not believe that ministry is only for the pastors and leaders. Rather the pastors and leaders are called to train the people for the work of the ministry (Eph 4:11-13).

6. Contextualization
We value making sense to our culture and helping people understand our words and actions. We want to praise and embody the good things of our neighborhood and lovingly critique those things that are harming it (1 Cor 9:19-23)

7. Inner-City
We value the inner-city of Miami and we choose not to neglect it.
